HAI Celebrates "Green Week" 5th - 10th June 2008

HAI believes that any growth and development cannot be termed so if it is not is sustainable. Sustainability can be possible only when each one is aware and takes responsibility for the environment giving back to the mother Earth and to the community at least a part of what it takes. While members of the HAI have a green approach inherent in their functioning in one way or the other, a special week has been identified by HAI to demonstrate this commitment in a creative and unique way.

This week aptly titled 'Green Week' started on the 5th June, a day that is commemorated as the "World Environment Day" and culminated on the 10th of June. The vision of this initiative reads as follows:

"To create and sustain awareness and adherence for waste management pollution control and energy providing a healthy environment for our people and community to meet national and international standards".

Each day of the week had a special theme. The week started logically with a 'green initiative' on day one. On this day, each member hotel created green displays in the lobby while green messages were flashed prominently by way of banners/notice boards, etc. on the hotel premises.

The second day was slotted as the 'green slogan' day. A few slogans that were a little more creative and caught the eye more than the others were 'we belong to the earth and not otherwise'; 'we look more beautified when alive'; 'you can make the difference'

The fervour took on a higher pitch on day 3 with 'The Green Flag' day which saw every single employee wearing. 'I love my environment' flags on their lapels. The flags were distributed to all the hotel guests as well and it was heartening to see a lot of the guests sporting the green flags as they moved around in the hotel public areas.

The green theme immediately conjures images of plants and trees. The fourth day was therefore titled the 'Green Saplings' day and tender saplings were gifted to the guests as they checked out of hotels, conveying the fragility of the environment and the greatness of trees which are the life line of all creatures and provide essential oxygen.

The Fifth day took, on an academic note and lectures were organized for the local school going children, guests and media. Delivered by Eminent Environmentalists they complemented the rest of the activities.

The week culminated on an energetic and enthusiastic note with a 'Green March; taking the message of environment conservation to the local community.

A few green moments at some of the member hotels have been captured below for all to share. While these are frozen in time, the 'green drive' carries on, following the simple philosophy of the three Rs namely

  • R educe
  • R ecycle
  • R euse
