World Environment Day Celebrations
HAI Celebrates "Environment Day" 5thJune 2014
In the year 1998, less than two years into its inception, Hotel Association of India, took the initiative to align with the "World Environment Day" program established by United Nations and promote it on the Hospitality Industry platform. Over the years this initiative has evolved into a significant public service activity for its member hotels across India. Each member hotel of the Association observes this day with great enthusiasm.
The 5th of June 2014, marked the launch of the 17th HAI Environment Day Celebrations in all HAI member hotels with the following objective :
- To demonstrate the hotel industry's commitment to protection of environment
- Making hotels the fulcrum for people of all walks of life to come together to minimize their footprint on the environment
- Ensuring for hotel guests, visitors, employees, local communities and school children and the future generation a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook
The Trident, Bandra Kurla in Mumbai built its program for the day on the theme 'Towards a Greener Tomorrow' NGOs like Kuprkabi, Dr. M.L. Dhawale Memorial Trust, Floria Naturals and Shilpin Handicrafts, working for sustainable development. Eco-friendly products made from jute, recycled paper; handmade soaps, khaadi and clay were displayed and the use thereof promoted. The Imperial in Delhi worked on the theme "Raise your Voice, Not The Sea Level'
Member hotels created attractive displays on their premises. Activities like Earth hour, sapling plantation drives, drives to prevent food wastage, re-cycling drives were organised. Hotel cafeterias crafted green menus for the day’s meals while screening movies on environmental issues. Guests and employees adorned “green?badges/flags with pride. Employees and children participated in Poster making competitions, quiz competitions, environment walks.
The Park Hotel in New Delhi deserves a special mention for their visit to an old age home .A hotel team spent a day with the elderly inmates- sang and danced together and served them a sumptuous meal. Later the inmates and the hotel team together planted roses, basil, jasmine plants and a guava tree on the home premises. The Park Hotel also organised an evening with Bahar Dutt titled “Must development always be in conflict with environment? Eminent panelists Jairam Ramesh, Sunita Narain and Suhasini Haider discussed environmental issues while celebrating Dutt’s publication “Green Wars?
5th June is not just one day, environment conservation is a continuous process and “going green?is an ongoing endeavour at all HAI member hotels
